The Philippines is surrounded by many alluring beaches, many of them blessed with big waves that are perfect for surfing. The Hawaiian water sport has become been gaining steam, fueled by accessible waves and affordable novice courses. With the combination of sun, sand, and waves, surfing is the perfect break. Here are 5 of our favorite spots:
1. The PaRk, Real (Quezon)
Situated in Real, Quezon, Pacific Recreation Kamp (The PaRK) is a popular spot that’s known for its hazel sand beach and beautiful rock formations. It’s welcoming for surfing beginners because waves only reach 2 to 4 feet. Tents and huts are available for rent, but bringing your own food is recommended. After a day in the surf, visitors can go to the serene Prayer Mountain overlooking the ocean, or the picturesque Balagbag Falls, just a jeepney ride away.
2. Bagasbas Beach, Daet (Camarines Norte)
Highly recommended for beginners and even advanced surfers, Bagasbas boasts a 2-kilometer fine gray-sand beach and its consistent year-round waves marks itas a rising new spot for surfing events and clinics. Among the beach breaks, waves often reach 3 to 8 feet. Surfing lessons and board rentals are available at very low rates and in case you get tired of surfing, you can relax, mingle with the locals, and just experience the small-town vibes of the town.
3. Dahican Beach, Mati (Davao Oriental)
The “Surfing Mecca” of Davao, Dahican Beach, is an astonishing 7-kilometer stretch of white sand beach, which enjoys waves reaching up to 10 feet. It is also home to the Amihan Boys, popular homegrown surfers, who advocate the preservation of marine life. Aside from surfing, you may relish the sea and the marine life by going on one of the boat tours. But prepare to camp on the sands if you want to stay overnight.
4. Siargao Islands (Surigao Del Sur)
Dubbed as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines, Siargao Island placed 9th in the list of the World’s 50 Best Surf Spots by CNN in 2013. It is also famous for ‘Cloud 9’, an internationally renowned reef break. There are a variety of surfing spots with different levels of difficulty, allowing beginners and advanced surfers to find the wave they want. You can also go island hopping in the picture-perfect islands of the Sohoton Lagoon, the Magpaponko swimming hole, and the Taktak falls.
5. Charlie’s Point, Baler (Aurora)
Charlie’s Point is the famous location shot for the Apocalypse Now (1977). Since then, it has been a popular place for surfing, not just because of Coppola’s film but also because of its thrilling medium and high breaks. Additionally, few people know about this spot. The best surfing time to visit is from October to February. You could also make a side trip to Sabang Beach to relax in the tranquility of the ocean.
