In the year 2014, the Philippines had been tagged as the Social Media Capital of the World. Based on research, Facebook and Twitter are the top two sites mostly used by Filipinos. Things easily go viral simply because a lot of Filipinos are on social media.
There is no wonder why some of the government officials have also entered the world of social media in the Philippines. Politicians turned to social media to communicate either to their constituents, or the general public to push their agendas and advocacies to netizens. So what makes them so different than others? Here are the notable officials who have taken their social media to the next level.
Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago
She’s fierce. She’s feisty. She was dubbed as the “Iron Lady of Asia” and she took that reputation with her on social media. Her #patama and #hugot lines have been liked, shared and retweeted by her fans and followers. Her success on social media extended to the publication of two books entitled “Stupid is Forever” and “Stupid is Forevermore”. Here are some of her well-known lines that had everyone burst into laughter and sharing frenzy.
Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla
Governor Jonvic Remulla of Cavite is one of the most influential people according to People Asia Magazine’s list of “People of the Year 2013” alongside 2013 Miss World Megan Young. He’s known for his cheeky class suspension posts on rainy days. His humorous side was then transformed into trending posts on both Facebook and Twitter. Students always find it more exciting and entertaining to wait for his announcements, even those from all over the country consider him “cool” for this. Here are some of his noticeable posts:
Former Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim
Alfredo Siojo Lim served as Mayor of the City of Manila from 1992 to 1998 and 2007-2013; he was also a senator of the Philippines from 2004-2007. Because of his tough stance he earned the nickname “Dirty Harry”. He is known for witty retorts to other politicians and government agency. Here’s a sample:
The trend of politicians using social media is not limited to the Philippines, a lot of government officials in other countries use their social media pages to get their message across.
USA President Barack Obama
One of the most followed politicians, US President Barack Obama is known for his witty retort during the 2012 elections where Clint Eastwood made a speech talking to “Invisible Obama”. It didn’t take long for Obama to respond to Eastwood that immediately became a meme and spread all over social media. He posted a picture of him sitting on a chair marked “The President” with a caption “This seat’s taken” on his Twitter account.
What makes them different is that these highly respected politicians have amped up their way of communicating to the public. It’s amusing how they balance humor and get stellar performance with their jobs. The coming 2016 election would probably bring more of these funny tweets and #hugot. We’re excited to make another compilation on May.
