The 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) ended a few weeks ago, but the technologies featured at the event have continued making a buzz on social media in the Philippines where many readily adopt new consumer appliances and tech gadgets. Throughout its history, CES has launched some of the most important consumer tech products of our time, including the VCR, the camcorder, the compact disc, HDTV, the Xbox, and more. This year’s trade show is no different having given us a glimpse of a future worth looking forward to.
Passenger Drone
Unlike unmanned military and hobby drones, the Ehang 184 is capable of carrying a passenger. Imagine what that means for motorists stuck on EDSA. The control is also simple enough that it doesn’t require a pilot’s license or training, and navigation is fully automated. Manufactured by Chinese company Ehang, the 184 can fly as high as 11,000 feet at speeds up to 100kph.
Wearable Translator
With ASEAN integration coming closer to reality, we in the Philippines need a more convenient and efficient way to communicate with our Southeast Asian neighbors given that not everyone in the region speaks English fluently. Enter ili, a wearable translator that can translate languages in real time without the need for internet connection. Currently, ili supports English, Chinese, and Japanese.
Virtual Reality Headset
By creating worlds that would otherwise be impossible, virtual reality takes gaming to a whole new level. At the CES, high-performance gaming hardware developer Razer debuted its OSVR (Open Source Virtual Reality) headset, designed to make it easier for developers to create virtual reality games that work across operating systems. Hopefully, Razer will demo the headset soon at the company’s Philippine concept store.
OLED
Bendable and rollable, Organic Light Emitting Diodes or OLEDs represent the future of audiovisual displays.LG installed their working OLEDs everywhere at the CES event, wrapped across surfaces in every way possible.
Driverless Cars
CES has been jokingly referred to as the Car Electronics Show as numerous automakers participate to display the capabilities of their electronic automobiles. This year, Faraday Future presented the FFZERO1, an electric car that can be fully automated via a smartphone app.
As it had been in the past, the technologies featured at this year’s CES will seep into people’s lives here in the Philippines, first through social media before making their way into our homes and offices.
