The announcement regarding the closing of several mining operations received different opinions from various media platforms on the start of February. According to the DENR Secretary Gina Lopez, they have decided to close the mining operations that are near functional watersheds to reiterate that “water is important.” Also, she insisted that closing these mining operations doesn’t mean loss of jobs but giving residents of the affected areas a more sustainable and long term source of income. Incarceration of Sen. Leila De Lima

The year started with the case of Sen. Leila De Lima and her alleged involvement on the illegal drug trade at the New Bilibid Prison. De Lima is a known advocate of Human Rights and the fiercest critic of President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs. She was arrested as ordered by the Muntinlupa RTC for cases filed by her detractors. She is currently detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame.

One of the biggest news in first quarter of 2017 is the alleged billion-peso accounts of President Rodrigo Duterte. Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, another critic of the President said that Duterte has Php 2.407 billion involving 17 accounts recorded over a period of nine years. Said accounts were spread in three banks, two in Manila and one in Davao. Both of them said that they will resign if the other proves that their allegation is true. Trillanes accused the President of having undeclared assets excluding in his bank accounts.

89th Academy Award Fiasco

It was like another Steve Harvey moment when Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced that La La Land won the Best Picture during the 89 thAcademy Award. Right after the announcement, one of the crew approached Jordan Horowitz, Producer of La La Land, regarding the mistake that happened. Shortly, Moonlight was announced as the winner of the Best Picture. It was a mixed emotion for both cast and crew of the films but in the end, the mistake was corrected and Moonlight got the award.
